Guess who you are!
Submitted by TE Editor on 26 March, 2008 - 09:54
I've read these wonderful ideas for speaking lessons, and decided to send you some I have tried with my students:
- put the names of famous people (either dead or alive) on some slips of paper and stick them to the students backs. They CAN'T tell each other who they are.
- Then they take turns to describe the person to one student who tries to guess "who" is at his/her back. We really had fun !!

Hi Joanna,
As soon as I saw the topic of your activity, I had a pretty clear idea of what it was going to be about! I do this guessing game usually as an ice-breaker at the very beginning of the class, and with a 99.9% success rate I can freely recommend it to other EFL teachers worldwide!
This would be an amusing activity to do as a follow-up to learning new vocabulary concerning people's outer appearance. Students have learned new words or phrases about a person's hair colour or hair length or clothing, and they now get the chance to put them in proper context.
Thanks for pointing it out from the multitude of activities!

I use the same game with the words as a revision game. Teachers can use it with different things. Recently I have used this game with animals. Students describe each other animals and try to find it. We can do it for body parts, vegetables, clothes and so on. This is very simple and useful game.
I have to start with a new Unit, which will be about getting a job / thoughts about career, etc., in class 9. Do you think it would be a nice introduction to give them cards with job descriptions which they have to read out and let their classmates guess what job is meant!?
