      7 Monitoring

Your students are on task - now encourage them!

How do you know if speaking activities are successful?

      Before you watch
When your students are doing a speaking activity:

      • Where do you stand in the classroom?
      • How do you know if the students use the target language?
      • How do you help the quieter/ weaker students to participate?

All of these things are part of monitoring. Now watch the video and see what advice the teachers give about monitoring learners during speaking activities.

Teaching English as a second language is significantly different than teaching English literature and composition to a high school class of  native speakers, though of course there is some overlap as well.
