Group work, warmers and controlled practice
Some simple ways to make speaking activities work.
Before you watch
Think about a successful speaking activity you have done. Why did it work well?
- How were the students grouped (pairs, etc)?
- How did you set the activity up?
- Did you give the students any useful language before the task?
Watch the video and listen to teachers talking about how they set up activities in class.
Reflection
Which comments do you agree with? When is it better to set up activities in your own language?

shailey asthana ELT PD Trainer
I must congratulate the team of TE BBCsite for showing us such informative and educative training videos. Teaching speaking video is highly educative.I'm learning a lot of techniques from it. Being an ELT trainer I feel we must constantly work on language teaching skills and above all how to make it learner centered. To teach one must be a good learner as well.I'm enjoying my virtual classroom a lot . John Kay's teaching techniques are good. Keep up the good work.
