This part of the site is for teachers working with children. It offers a range of activities and lesson ideas which are based around online materials from the British Council's LearnEnglish Kids website. Most of the materials can be used either online or can be downloaded and used in the classroom.

Teeth

In this lesson, students will listen to a song about taking care of teeth and complete some comprehension activities. Then they will think about different good and bad ways of looking after teeth, and produce either a poster or a questionnaire related to their ideas. Finally, they will look at the different types of teeth we have and their function.

Seasons

In this lesson, students will look at different features of the seasons. They will listen to and sing a song, and watch a story about the changing seasons. They will think about words and ideas connected to the different seasons, and then work together to produce a poster. Finally students can complete a craft activity or play a game.

Parts of the body

In this lesson, students will review or be introduced to vocabulary for parts of the body. They will either sing a song about parts of the body and extend their language through inventing a monster, or they can focus on internal parts of the body through a quiz, and practise describing people’s faces in detail. Finally, they can complete a project on how to have a healthy lifestyle.

Environment

In this lesson, students will be introduced to vocabulary to describe environmental issues. They will watch a story about different environmental issues and sing a song about ways of helping the environment. They will practise using ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ to talk about helping the environment, and think about what they do or can do, by playing a game and conducting a class survey. Finally, they will talk about recycling and either make a poster or write a poem, and do a recycling craft activity.

Time

In this lesson, students will be introduced to telling the time in English. They will practise telling the time with a variety of games and activities, and will make their own clock. They will then watch a story about children around the world doing different things at different times. Finally, they will practise using the present continuous to describe their actions and other children’s actions as they mime.

Sport

In this lesson, students will review vocabulary for sports and extend it with the clothes and equipment needed to play various sports, then make a poster about a sport. Then they will watch a story about an extreme sport adventure camp, learn vocabulary for extreme sports, practise the ‘would like to’ structure and survey their classmates. Finally, they will either watch a story about a school sports day and design a sport, or they will watch a football-related story and write about their favourite football team.

School

In this lesson, students will be introduced to and play games to review classroom furniture and objects. They will sing a song or watch a video with which they will practise either classroom language or using ‘must’ and ‘mustn’t’ to talk about rules, and either role play being the teacher or write rules for their ideal school. Then they will do a survey about school subjects and look at different rooms in a school and activities which are happening there. Finally they can design their own school uniform and bring all their work together in the form of an ideal school project poster.

Playground

In this lesson, students will learn some vocabulary for playground equipment and practise talking about doing activities in the playground. They will then listen to a song or watch a story about playing in the playground. They can produce a story about a dog’s adventure, carry out a class survey about what students like doing in the playground, then design their own playground.

Numbers

In this lesson students play a maths game, listen to and read a story, then play a board game. They talk about numbers and then complete a worksheet on this topic for homework.

Space

In this lesson, students will look at the planets in the solar system and features of planets. They will listen to and sing a song, and play a game about the planets, then watch a story about features of different planets. They will practise describing planets using ‘there is/are’, and then work together to invent their own planet. Finally students can play a game or sing a song.
