Our global courses give you the chance to learn and share with teachers from all over the world!

All the courses have been written by our experienced team of writers and trainers. They fall into three categories:

  • Self-access workshops: short online workshops for you to study on your own
  • Self-access courses: courses you can start at any time, studying when you want
  • Moderated courses: led by a British Council moderator, these courses have fixed start dates

English for Teaching

If you are teaching English and want to improve your English while you also develop your teaching skills, then this course is for you!

Primary Essentials

If you want an introduction to teaching English to young learners aged 7 to 11, then this course is for you. Using video, audio and community elements, you will learn the essentials to help you succeed in your teaching.

TKT Essentials

The TKT Essentials course is for inexperienced teachers or teachers in pre-service training, experienced teachers who want to refresh their knowledge, experienced teachers who want to gain knowledge of CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) and teachers preparing to take the TKT test.


CLIL Essentials

The course is suitable for experienced primary and secondary school teachers, either language teachers supporting subject teachers or subject teachers working in a CLIL context.

Learning Technologies for Business English Teachers

This course has been designed to give both experienced and new business English teachers an introduction to the types of tools that can enhance their teaching and help them deliver engaging lessons with sound pedagogical outcomes.

Learning Technologies for the Classroom

This is a teacher development course that introduces teachers of English to the main aspects of using new technologies in the language classroom. The course modules cover a range of web technologies, with topics including using the internet, cyber well-being for learners, using Office applications, using online video and audio, and using social networking and other web technologies for educational purposes..

Special Educational Needs

The course is aimed at teachers of English as a subject or teachers teaching through the medium of English working in mainstream learning contexts. It is suitable for both primary and secondary teachers and not just for SEN (Special Educational Needs) specialists.

Steps to Success

If you're finishing your studies to be a teacher or are in your first two years of teaching, then you will benefit from this course. It will help you make the transition from student teacher to professional and put the theory that you have learned into practice.

In-service Teacher Development Workshops

These workshops offer you an opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills in some key topics in English language teaching. Each topic is covered by 2 or 3 short self-study workshops. The topics are process writing, grammar, learning styles and becoming a reflective practitioner.


MA in English Language Teaching: Online

Enhance your career prospects with the world’s English experts and open up a world of opportunities with an internationally recognised post-graduate qualification in English language teaching from the UK.

The MA in ELT has been developed by the British Council in collaboration with Southampton University and is completely online, offering you an affordable and convenient way to study. It takes 2.5 years and is aimed at experienced English teachers.

Focusing on current theory and practice in applied linguistics and language teaching, the course will help you develop advanced knowledge and skills in English language curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

Take this course and you will:

  • take part in online discussions with internationally renowned staff from the University of Southampton
  • learn through using interactive multimedia course materials including lectures and podcasts
  • have access to the University library and its stock of e-books and journals online
  • gain the skills and knowledge you need to take on leadership roles in ELT

Free online learning

You can get a taste of what studying this MA would be like with the free online course Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching at FutureLearn. It’s been developed jointly by the University of Southampton and the British Council. 

Scholarship opportunities

If you take this free short course, you could become eligible to apply for a small number of scholarships to cover part of the fees on the MA. The scholarship would cover first-year fees on this 2.5-year online programme. You will have opportunity to register your interest during the course.

Terms and conditions for the scholarships:

  • You need to be a fully participating learner in our Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching MOOC.
  • Scholarships will be awarded by the lead academics on the online MA programme, by judging applicants’ personal statements.
  • Instructions on how to apply for a scholarship for the online MA programme will be given to you at the end of the Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching free online course.
