Memorizing vocabulary  

I'm teaching at a middle school in Italy (students aged 11-14). Some of my students have problems with vocabulary and don't seem to be able to memorize the new words.

Teaching vocabulary  
I would like to know the best approaches for teaching English vocabulary to beginners.
Synonyms  

I have a question about how to teach synonyms and their specific usage. For example, when do we use snake and when do we use serpent?
