The internet is one of the most modern resources for the teacher, but it's not always easy to use. There are technical problems and also difficulty finding useful material from the millions of pages that are out there.
Some people think the internet is a brilliant resource, some think it is more trouble than it is worth. What's your view?
Do the advantages of using the internet for teaching outweigh the disadvantages?

Hi There colleagues! I've been using Internet in teaching some of my university classes and the students just love it, although you have to be on top of those few students who end up reading their e-mails. I think there's so much to use and I believe it's a matter of being resourceful and creative.

Hello! Thank you for your programme and your initiative on voting.
I teach in Florence (Italy) and was impressed to see what a powerful tool the Internet can be in improving students' command of the English language.
All of a sudden the students are completely absorbed by what they are reading. Sometimes you have to stop them when the time of the lesson is up.
However every method has its drawbacks. In this case we may have to cope with a much less teacher-centred kind of lesson. And not all teachers are prepared or willing to face such a new situation in their classrooms.

Not only do students widen their knowledge on the particular subject they are interested in by using the Internet but they can also improve their English indirectly. It is an ideal method of language improvement particularly for students who have difficulties with memorising words and grammar. However there is also a disadvantage in the use of Internet: students do not practise talking and/or listening to English. They can only practise their reading and writing/spelling skills.

Hi, I find that the internet is a most useful tool to have and to use, it has many resources and ideas which help all teachers I am sure that if this had been around many years ago it would now be old hat and not as some regard it as new techonology, use it and enjoy your teaching and your students will enjoy and learn more. .

I think the Internet is the best way for learning everything. The problem is: "Where do I search?" The information is there, but some people don't know searching.

I work at Turku Polytechnic in Turku, Finland where I teach English for Specific Purposes. I design my own material since it is not always possible to find suitable text books. So I try to find articles or websites on the Internet with relevant vocabulary or issues and I use those as a source of teaching material. I would certainly feel quite isolated if I was not using the Internet. I have to admit, though, that it can be time-consuming and sometimes you need to do some lateral thinking and move away from traditional teaching resources. For example, when I was working with the laboratory technicians, I found that the product catalogues of laboratory suppliers are a valuable vocabulary generator.

Hello, I mostly search the internet for extra activities, but also to get myself posted on new techniques and methodology. As Alex, I also think that the problem in using the internet in teaching is where to search. There are millions of different sites and bits of information, it's kind of hard to sort them out and select the best ones.

As a teacher at an adult education centre I was often at a loss where and how to get suitable articles for my students. But now the Internet with all these wonderful resources (one of them this link) is for me like a path strewed with golden knowledge - nuggets. I only have to bend down and collect them.

I think the internet is an invaluable tool in my search for new and interesting ideas. I agree that it can be difficult knowing where to look but I simply to go to 'Links' and choose one. I have found some excellent sites which I save in my Favorites for future reference. Apart from being a useful source of information, I find it helps me to keep 'in touch' with other English trainers - albeit via the written word.
