Emerging Internet technologies have a great impact on both teaching and learning. Probably the amount of information, data and research a learner can get from the new technologies is ten times more important in quantity and quality than it used to be in the time of Shakespeare. It is more motivating, exciting and engaging than any other tools of learning. In addition, it is constantly changing which adds a touch of creativity. Moreover, technology makes you more dynamic, communicative and interactive. In a nutshell technology provides innovative class materials which help make the difference for competition in the third millennium.
Rozina Jumani, Pakistan
Yes, certainly it has impacted the way we learn things globally. In relation to teaching I must say that contextual resources /teaching is crucial while doing it I think we are become learners and become more efficient to share the problems we face while teaching. I must say that it has parallel negative aspect as now people spend less time in deep down thinking on certain problems on the contrary they take refuge in seeking opinions from others.
Anierobi, Nigeria
Technology has actually improved the learning process. It has actually simplified learning process and made learning accessible to as many that wish to learn. I am of the view also, that technology has equally and adversely affected the lives of people such that a lot of atrocities are committed on a daily bases.
Silvia, Argentina
From my own experience I can tell you it really did.I learned all this at St Andrews university and my students really enjoyed other material than a book. I love being innovative, so maybe this really helps. I believe that a teacher has to be updated and technology is part of it.
Magdalena Arévalo, Venezuela
I teach instrumental English to medicine students, technology has helped me greatly to find interesting, new and really useful materials for them and even myself! Although in my University we do not have a great deal of technological resources available in the classroom, simple things like TV, CD players and Internet can do wonders for students, for example we watch TV shows like E.R or Dr House to improve listening and vocabulary, we find updated articles in the Internet about new treatments or recent discoveries to use in reading. The students email me homework when we cannot meet in class for any reason. It is almost impossible to teach or do anything nowadays without using technology!
Elrico Roman, South Africa
What possible disadvantages is there to the use of technology in the classroom? What should teachers be careful for?
Lisette Makhoul, Lebanon
Although I am a teacher who talks a lot in class, I do engage my students in almost everything I do. Technology in that matter has helped me a lot because I can use information on the net to enlighten my students, I use the LCD projector to present information on PowerPoint, and I also use the DVD player to let my students see and hear for real what English is all about. However, I still need to know how I can use technology better, especially that I have created for my students a group on Facebook in order to post additional information for them.
Eliana Barrios, Chile
The tape has been of great help for those teachers who do not produce a second language as they should. With my students at the University we have worked the introduction of new technologies in the classroom, using Freinet´s techniques and methodology, stressing communication, schools open to the community and cooperative learning.
Marija Liudvika Drazdauskiene, Lithuania
The role of the tape recorder had the most significant and lasting effect on teaching. When travel was restricted to English speaking countries, tape recorded texts extended the context of communication to a willing learner from one (his classroom teacher) to two or three participants (those in the recorded materials). The possibility to record oneself was also a very important means facilitating learning and keeping the foreign language attended. Radio added, the foreign learner of English had quite a company with some degree of peace around him. TV extended the learning context but also added more noise, while the internet has facilitated cheating in the first instance: the materials are plagiarised not infrequently, the information is used with little concern for its precision and identity and some materials are produced just to impress that the student has got hold of something the teacher had not shown or given. As in many spheres at present, the internet is not used to the advantage it offers.
Chijioke E Ezeh, Nigeria
Technology has really changed the way we teach here in Nigeria. It may be hampered by the fact that not all students, and teachers alike, have the equipment and understanding to use these tools. However, this is almost insignificant given the population of those who have and those who don't and the speed of computer literacy penetration.
No doubt, there are some areas where technology can't easily make better but to say it hasn't altered the way we teach and learn would be to deny the obvious. Technology has clearly created the room for deeper classroom engagement, and outside the classrooms, has fostered better links among study groups.
Amrullah, Indonesia
I think that IT has helped me in teaching. Using a lap top and LCD projector I can improve the students' attention in what I'm teaching especially online lesson.
Rocío García, Mexico City
Not using technology in the EFL classroom is unthinkable nowadays. Students of all ages are immerse in technology in their everyday life, so how could we not include it in our lessons? Power-point presentations, attractive and visually friendly grammar or vocabulary worksheets made in PCs, the use of the internet for authentic reading and listening and many other tools modern technology provide us with!!
Leigh Rogers, South Korea
I think that this is one of those areas where, if teachers' are not careful, they can fall behind their students.
Angela, China
I think that IT has potential in the classroom IF you have the equipment, the software and the IT support to maintain the equipment. It isn't available in the classrooms I use. Also most of my students do not have access to computers on a regular basis out of class without paying.
Carlos Rubio, Ecuador
Definitely, technology has made all teaching process faster. Using multimedia and the right method can improve the students' outcomes a lot. Furthermore, using technology enriches students experiences, so they feel more motivated.
Markus Iwang, Flores, Indonesia
IT help me more in teaching English to my students. My students are more enthusiastic and easy to understand the lessons. I'm the only teacher who use IT in my schools that's why make students never bored studying and never playing truant, while they're doing tasks I always play them music that most convenient to them. IT also really help me in preparing materials and lesson plan. Everything become easy and fast.
Ursula Huancas, Peru
Well, It has brought variety to the way we teach, proximity to our students lifestyles furthermore, independence for your students because they can go on their own pace so I would say that technology is a great tool if you know how to use it. Everything depends on your aims and students' necessities.
Vinh, Belgium
Technology has undeniably improved our way of teaching on condition that it is used properly to avoid boredom among pupils. Take, for example, the valuable use of search engines which help doing research on a particular subject in a relatively short period of time. On balance,it saves time and money.
Nora Alicia Anzora de Jerez
Of course it has. I started teaching English in 1978, and the only resource that I had in the school where I worked was an English text. I used to make drawings and I used to buy magazines and newspapers to get some cuts. That was really hard for me because it took me hours to prepare the material for each class. Nowadays I download material from internet. I can use a computer in the classroom or take the students to the computer lab. At present, teachers have excellent resources in the palm of their hands ready to be used.
André Mata, Brazil
Technology has made easy the whole process of preparing classes and the lesson plans and even it has also been into classroom in power point presentation and DVD.
Laura, Uruguay
At the moment, I am preparing a workshop on how to use Internet to enhance one´s command of the language and I am amazed at how much this technology (Internet) can help. For instance, if I think of myself so far away from native speakers of the language, Internet makes me feel much closer to them now. Thanks!
Gopal Midha, India
I use technology in the classroom and I feel that it has tremendous advantages especially in relation to individualised learning and instruction. You don't need complicated and expensive software - a program which allows (a) the students to learn at their own pace (b) you to set questions and later
check which students took how much time to answer those questions can give an insight into problem areas.
Mr. Lion, Chile
A lot. I think technology is an excellent tool for the teaching learning process. We, teachers, must be updated in order to take advantages of the different technological resources that are here, there and everywhere. We don't have to be afraid of them. Our students have grown with new technologies, so if we want to get close to our students we must learn how to use technologies to improve our pedagogical practices and motivate them to acquire English in a different and successful way.
Cláudia Amaral, Brazil
The computer has helped a lot improve the process teaching-learning.
Marni Jamil, Malaysia
From my own experience, technology is important as it had helped me a lot during English classes when I was teaching at a secondary school last year. Technology develops teachers' creativity as they can come up with different ideas on how to utilise the available programs installed on the computer. Moreover, students' interest can easily be captured when they are presented with captivating audio-visuals.
Yolanda Mirela Catelly , Romania
IT in class is certainly beneficial for various reasons:
Tasnimur Rahman, India
By and large, technology has permeated the teaching arena too, which strengthens the statement by Dr. Wilmut "It is the duty of the scientist to invent and advance technology, but it is up to society to use it." Hence, technology has transformed the way we teach and assimilate knowledge.
Irina, Russian Federation
Technology has changed the way I communicate with my students. Some teachers cannot keep up-to-date, because students master new technologies and new language. They learn new realities of our life but the teachers keep behind. They have nothing in common with their students, nothing to talk about, no topics to discuss. You have to be one step ahead of your students, to have common topics, to know what interest them. Most of all they are interested in new technologies in Russia. This is the main point of their talks when they are outside the classroom. I think, computers and the Internet help me a lot in our mutual understanding. And I believe, to be able to understand each other is 50 % of success in teaching.
Samir Ibrahim, Syria
I really like the new technology in teaching and learning. However, I think that we use it not because it is much better but because it is there. Teaching technologies are not available where I teach but I think I can reach my ends with some fun and some chalk.
Kate M. Wong, Trinidad West Indies
The Internet, e-mails, 'cell phones, multi-media projectors and of course the computer itself, including the lovely laptop have certainly opened new horizons for teachers and in my experience enhance communicative teaching/learning providing not only visual and audio support, but opportunities for real information and opinion gap activities, and live exchanges between students, not to mention software such as power point which has endless possibilities. Like all good teaching aids, they help memory, improve motivation, and enhance learning. Of course, it is easy to argue that technology is a must in any good classroom. However, when faced with a low budget which barely covers the costs of equipment, software and service, access to the wonderful world of IT is seriously impaired and unexpected power cuts can ruin a beautifully planned session.
Much as I love the benefits of technology, if I could not teach successfully without it, I would hang my hat up tomorrow!
Chicago, USA
Schools in large urban systems often don't have access to up-to-date technology, or, if we do, there is little hands-on training or maintainence. So - technology becomes frustrating. Knowing that some select schools have what they need and most of us don't worsens the frustration.
Rogerio Luques, Brazil
Well I think that if you have access to Internet why not use this wonderful tool.
Amna Bedri, Sudan
I agree that its necessary and helpful especially in places where references and teaching material is not readily available but the problem is to convince teachers to try it out.
Prabha Muthukrishnan, India
Technology has definitely improved teaching and learning process. Pupils enjoy and perceive what they see and hear. Computers especially power point presentation ,CDs and videos are highly motivating and enjoyable. I find such modern technology quite useful.
Deepshikha Tiwari, India
I am an English teacher in a rural area, where we don't have that much facilities but I wish to teach my students my level best. I hope they would get everything which I could get or couldn't, wish they get best of technology soon .
Imam, Morocco
Technology has improved the way we teach via different changes. The internet helps both teachers and students doing their researches, but mobile phones make it easier for students to cheat in the exams which obviously changes the traditional way of controlling students during the exams periods,........
Rubayee Ahmed, Bangladesh
Modern technology, the internet, has made a significant improvement in the students I'm teaching. They are able to access information and carry out research work for any project or task without having to worry about expensive books. Not only that but it seems today's students have more knowledge and are therefore able to view topics in a realistic way. That is they can synthesize information more readily than we could when we (my generation)went to school.
Steve, Bangladesh
IT and ICT has improved and changed teaching and learning process and using them in teaching and learning process is necessary and urgent for all teachers.
Naima, Tunisia
Yes absolutely teachers are accessing more teaching resources and students are becoming more independent.
Eric, Thailand
In the classroom, teachers can control precisely audio playback and can use video downloaded from the Internet. Presentation software helps keep slower students from feeling left behind, and can be used on school web sites or in self-access language learning centers so that students can review lessons. Computer-assisted language learning programs are a valuable tool for Thai students, who are painfully reluctant to make errors in class. Technology, however, is just another useful tool that teachers can use, but these tools are absolutely meaningless to students without teachers' guidance. The teacher is essential in and out of the classroom.
Jay, China
Sometimes technology makes me lazy because I leave the preparation until the last minutes as a feel I can print something out from the computer instead.
Charlie Sabulao
In this time of information technology, education should gear up for that and maximize what the technology has to offer.
Sridevilazaras, India
Yes, as a teacher of English language we use English Labs to improve our engineering students' listening and speaking skills. They are getting benefited by these labs. By using Internet, we get lot of study material to teach students effectively. So I assure that technology has made better changes in all fields.
Abdul Ghnai N. Soomro, Pakistan
Yes. Technology has changed our mode of teaching and learning. It has vital importance in education world. Through technology we can easily transfer knowledge to our students in the class or outside the class. Those who don't know how to use technology in the class really they are now obsolete class teachers. So, it is necessary for us to bring commercial world in to the class for the benefit of learners.
B.Sivakami, India
I am pretty sure about the change in the perception of the teachers on teaching and learning with the technology promoted so far. It was impossible for the reach of the teaching material to a class of more than 50 students before the use of these technological devices. The immediate response of the students while using the technology was perceived many times when I worked as lecturer in English. It sustains the attention of the students and kindles their curiosity to know further. The completion of portion prescribed within the specified time is possible. It is always a benefit for the students and teachers.
Claudia, Spain
The best thing about technology is that it has obliged me to up date and look for different resources and update my teaching. The worst thing is that when I started using technology it caught my nerves and made me lose the confidence in my possibilities for learning. I was also very scared to start using it in my classes, but although It still takes me a lot of time, I'm very happy doing radio programmes ,videos research webquest....and my students are happy too.
Jamal Sharif, Iraq
I am quite sure that technology has improved the way we teach but of course for the countries where teachers can use in teaching and at the same time for the countries where the students can use in learning. In fact we need more improvement in using high technology in teaching specially proper methodology in using technology and we need more conferences for that to exchange experiences. And I would like to refer herewith that the majority of teachers who are now more than forty years age have no ability to use them specially in third world countries. In fact technology may be used in private institute for teaching languages but in state school not available and neglected.
Monica Vittadini, Italy
I'm making my first steps in using IWBs and I think they're a powerful tool to attract pupil's attention making lessons more lively and effective. However teachers should be highly flexible and ready to exploit all kinds of tools/materials in relation to their pupils and teaching environment.
Silvia, Argentina
Technology is a great help to teaching. Anyway it does not replace the teacher. It helps a lot.
Maria, Hungary
I was trying to find teaching materials about volcanoes on the net the other day. After the brilliant materials that I found I wonder why on earth students still go to school.
Vinh Bui, Belgium
In my opinion, technology has completely revolutionised our teaching and learning methods since it has made access to information easier need. Information can be shared and discussed on-line, which was unthinkable three decades ago. However, the question still remains how to provide people with some basic computer knowledge which would help them take advantage of modern technology.
George Steed, Poland
Technology advances have simplified the preparation of materials. Record keeping is easier. The internet has expanded the availability of subject materials. Teachers can demand machine printed homework. Students can easily write and re-write essays using a PC. I doubt that the teaching process is changed. There is simply more actual teaching time available.
Beatriz Fuentes, Argentina
I would like to point out that technology helps the learner to be in closer contact with the foreign language. These 'voices' are at a click's reach, and thus, language, the target language becomes alive, real. It is no longer SO foreign and our students find it easier to build up a relationship. However, I would also like to point out that we should not miss the fact that all these 'new' devices, whichever they are, ARE TOOLS, and I strongly believe that we should NOT miss this point. They are instruments that give all of us, students and teachers, a big hand in the difficult path towards mastering a 2nd/foreign language.
Clement Uzo Chukwudifu, Nigeria
Technology has really improved teaching and learning in many respects. From the Internet real time access while teaching, to the production of required sounds, colours and effects in class, IT and ICT have made some immense contributions to learning and teaching. In some of my lessons, my students have been virtually forced to pay attention on a topic which otherwise would have been boring and dry using the traditional method of teaching alone.
James Bernard Cheetham, Thailand
At this very moment, I am using technology to improve my teaching and my students learning by visiting this site.
It is axiomatic to say that anyone contributing a comment here uses technology to improve learning. Case proved!
Orlanda Sales
I think technology could have improved much more the way we teach. In my country most of the schools are not well equipped so it's not possible to take as much advantages of technology as we wished. However, Teachers are now much more informed due to Internet. Methodology has really been improving due to technology. Nothing is perfect.
Geoffrey Davidson, India
Technology has helped me a lot to teach English language. I could make even grammar classes interesting with the help of PowerPoint presentation. Vocabulary also could be taught with the help of video clippings.
Iraj Shahmalaki, Iran
IT and ICT has improved and changed teaching and learning process and using them in teaching and learning process is necessary and urgent for all teachers.
Asif Chowdhury, Director, Ait, Bangladesh
The way we teach: well, the way teachers have been teaching, era after era, has got certain language of art. After all, to me, teaching is an art. It is an effective concrete art which has life! This teaching can only be successful when it can combine few factors, successfully with the mode of application. To make fruitful as well as successful of your mission, you need to make a plan which must be supported by absolute strategy and activation. In these regards, if you are backed up by technology then certainly your teaching quality will improve.
