I think it's important to help students identify their own learning styles, as once they know which they are, they can put them to work in a more focused way. But I think it' also important to encourage students to try learning in ways they aren't much used to, so as to increase their chances of profiting from every learning opportunity.

Dr.S.Fiayaz Ahmed

Identifying the learning styles by learners themselves is a complex task as most of the learners are not aware of these. On the part of the teachers identifying lthe learning styles of various learners present in their classrooms could be an enormous task as most of the time teachers are busy in identifying the right kind of pedagogy and methodology to teach the learners in the classroom. I personally feel that we need to empower both the teachers and learners about different learning styles with examples in each case. Such an exercise would help not only teachers who are ignorant of different learning styles of various learners but also helps them in planning their lessons in a better way. The learners would also be helped by this exercise as they will associate themselves with the particular style with which they are able to understand the subject matter. Further, it provides an opportunity to the learners to experiment with different learning styles, though it may indeed be difficult, yet a few of them could be successful with different learning styles.

There's a good lesson plan here on the TE site which helps learner identify their learning styles.
