After the arrival of Information Communication Technology labs aided by the World Bank in almost all regions in Sri Lanka, English teachers like me now enjoy not only video supported teaching but also they even surf the internet with the students landing on MSN/YAHOO/GOOGLE etc, picking up things they want. Isn't that what the eclectic methodology(mixture of all) meant?

Using videos is one of effective ways to introduce particular language points that needs to be practised in classroom. A teacher can stress out on pronunciation. Using videos will facilitate better understanding and recognition of English sound, intonation, and stress pattern. A teacher can make students practice on using certain grammar rules, such as past tense, present continuous, and perfect. I sometimes use videos to motivate students on a certain topic will be discussed or to pay attention to specific vocabulary that they will have to learn. I think using video not only saves teacher time to talk but also explain.

I think it may give us the results we hope but not in all situations.
Dr.F.A.Shaikh, India
A teacher cannot be called a teacher if he/she is not using videos in the classroom (it may be sometimes) because the students understand the content of the material much more than the other methods of teaching if it is taught through videos. Teacher is he/she who takes care of students how they learn.
Lina Asfour, Israel
I believe it's a very helpful teaching tool, yet very difficult to use it in my big classes, each of 40 pupils.
Taking pupils to the video room makes a real mess, that's why I prefer using other methods.

I am an English teacher and use video to introduce authentic language into the foreign language classroom. Nevertheless, it is the teacher's responsibility to adapt video to the curriculum, students' level and age, to use special activities to enhance active viewing.

Using multimedia resources in the classroom makes teaching-learning a lively process. I have experienced in my Literature as well as language classroom that students are learning better with the help of such tools.
Krasimira Parusheva, Bulgaria
I can't use video in my classroom because I haven't any video, computer or radio... Sometimes I show to my students presentations which I make on the my own laptop.

Since I retired from Tefling to this Greek speaking country, watching English / American TV programmes with Greek subtitles is a very important part of my Greek learning strategies. I use it as a recreational self-teaching aid. I don't know how I would react to a teacher controlling what I was watching.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
I use video clips. But not so often. It's very useful and students like watching them. Sometimes they make their own clips.

Simply, integrating technology into the methods of education enhances both teaching and learning. In addition, it increases motivation, interest and active involvement. It may be a solution to the eternal discipline problem in our classrooms. Students are given opportunities for hands-on activities which is the essence of the student-centered approach. It adds an element of authenticity and genuineness to the tasks. It also prepares the learner for the demands of the job market. What's more, it supports communicative competence training and improvement. It brings the outside world into the class which is applying one of the 5Cs of Curriculum. That is change that lasts.

I use video in class sometimes. Videos have some advantages in teaching a language. First, I think I can attract the students attention easily. Second, Using videos is a good way to teach them some difficult points vividly. Finally, When they watch videos, they will enjoy themselves. But it's difficult for me to find the suitable videos to play.

I think using video is very necessary in classrooms. It creates a very interesting atmosphere and students respond very well.
Sandra Cartaxo, Brasil
It is the reality at the 2000 years.. But living in an under developed country my suggestion is balance the use of electronic and traditional methods.

Videos are helpful in teaching listening and speaking activities. Students forget themselves in the content, indirectly acquiring language.
Shahla, Iran
I think it would be very helpful to take more attention in the classroom and students would be excited to watch the videos.
Soumia, Morocco
Personally, I think that using video in he classroom breaks monotony and brings a positive change into the class. However, this is not always possible in the high school I'm teaching in because of the lack of video players an suitable discs.

I can't use video in my classroom because of the shortage of necessary appliances;video players, computers and so on.
Hemlata Khatnani, India
I work in a private organisation having centres all over India. We have our own tailor-made videos suiting the needs of the learners. I have noticed students are really excited to watch the videos. The teacher needs to take care where to pause and make it a fun way to learn.
Anton Waikkal, Sri Lanka
I'm a private teacher. I conduct many classes. I use video clips for my students. It's very helpful them to understand the language function and foreign pronunciation. But here Sri Lanka quite difficult to use video TV channels.

I work in the grammar school and the main problem is lack of really interesting stuff for teenagers who are bored because they have already watched something or they just find it stupid and unnecessary. Of course it is the matter of motivation but how to manage if you want to yawn looking at the library's resources?
Judy, China
I think it important to use the video in class, but in the country it is impossible to use it very often.
Fernando, Catalonia
I use video from intermediate levels on, basically because I think it's good input for students and because it's more motivating than adapted listening tasks.
Yogesh Singla,India
Stimulating and very effective in triggering the imagination of my students. As they say 'A picture is worth thousand words.' Just imagine the worth of a moving picture.
Austen Ezeifedi, Togo
Videos are a novelty in class. Students are excited by materials presented through videos. But the teacher to let them understand from the onset that the videos are only a means to an end, not the end.

I'm a high school teacher and work with students from eleven to eighteen years old, so I need to use some resources to keep students' interest. Video is one of them, it faces the students to real situations. It's excellent to make them to speak, even if they are at the very beginning stage.
Su, Taiwan
Students like to watch video. But it is hard to decide how many and which video to play.
Asha Sandilya, Mumbai , India
I have done several workshops on the use of film in ELT for teachers who have been very motivated to try this in their own classrooms. There are many more teachers trying this than there were ten years ago.
Ana, Argetina
I absolutely agree that using videos in the classroom is a positive item to encourage students learn the language. Not only do they listen to different people talking which helps to ear training, they do learn new vocabulary which is used in a contextualized way and they also follow a story. They are well motivated without realising they are learning English. Then, it's a good topic for conversation and discussion. I'd dare say it's a useful tool for the aural-oral approach.

Video is another useful tool to be used in the classroom and practise all four skills with it
Annamaria D.Kalmar, Hungary
Using video has become popular and integral part of my teaching activity, even in the one-to-one system. The BBC programmes (BBC Prime in particular) offer a lot of good ideas, i.e. recording episodes of popular serials, or selected short programmes. These recordings can be used for practising in the 4 skills and my students enjoy them very much. Watching video combined with well prepared 'before watching' and "after watching" tasks - including vocabulary building and making a grammar review. It is much more attractive and exciting, than getting into touch with the 'dry and boring' course matters.

I teach English to young adults whose span of attention is quite limited. So whenever I find it appropriate to supplement teaching using the visual medium, I very often resort to it and it has proved its worth in making language teaching interesting and effective.
Annie Gwynn, France
I use videos in class to introduce new topics, for comprehension, or as a starter for a production task. I find many useful short videos (less than 3 min) on the Internet.
Hicham Maat, Morocco
Using video in the EFL/ESL classroom has become increasingly indispensable, because of the inevitable influence of sound and picture revealed in a click-away age of Internet we are living in. And this, arouses endless effort and energy along with interesting intrinsic motivation from the learners.
Raffaella, Italy
They have to watch videos in English so they realize people speak this language, and live where this language is spoken.
Ed, China
I find (at training centers, but not the same at a Uni) students are paying good money to interact with me. They feel they can listen to tapes, watch movies and such on their own time. They don't want to do it in class.
Jesus Mendoza, Colombia
I work in a poor high school we do not have resources because the State does not give the schools for this topic. We are asking for help.

I prefer to use videos in Corporate Training Programmes in order to precipitate language learning. I have found it a very effective tool for proficiency development.
Will Nash, UK
I am using video as part of an EAP course as part of a computer assisted language learning module. I find it quite easy to find video content on-line, with or without tasks, and the student seem to respond well to this. I am doing some research into why students seem to like it...any ideas?
Dhruba lal Shrestha, Nepal
I think using video in the language classroom is a good idea. In the context of my county, English is a second and foreign language where everything cannot be made clear by explaining only.
Ambreen Asif Qureshi, Pakistan
Over the years I have found out that using video can be very helpful in literature as well as a language class. It stimulates students' interest in any topic where the teacher is unable to attract students' attention inspite of her best efforts.
Joseph Barbarise, China
At my university, videos are not able to be used in all classrooms. About 40% of my classes can see a video but the other 60% cannot. I tried to show 1 or 2, but it was not fair to all of them so I discontinued it. With 40 students per class, viewing on my laptop was not a viable solution. I wish we had more video players and more computers.
Rogério, Brazil
Well I think that video helps students fix the subject that they have studied more easily and it helps not only in grammar but also helps to improve the listening too.
Skipp, Canada
Video is great but can be abused.
Mark Jolis
Using video in the classroom would be ok, but for the little time the students spend on learning it is producing to little result and is too time consuming compared to all the other effective learning-methods.
Heidi C. Riggenbach Switzerland
listening for specific information can be more interesting if students get to watch too...I have used this with nurses... it can be adapted to the appropriate level but will take a bit of prep. It's fun and usually unexpected!
Pilar de Diego, Spain
I use video a lot, it's enjoyable, my students love it, it's a source of new information, new vocabulary and stands as a very important way to promote oral language
Ana Melo, Portugal
Using video in the classroom can be both an interesting approach to a subject and a warm up to develop different themes. Also it is a reliable way to learn the language in a real context, listening to native speakers.
Rodrigo Díaz, Chile
Among the several Multimedia resources for ESL enhancement we have got today, i.e. internet, radio, television, etc. Video is one of the most motivating and attractive one. The use you can give to videos as a teaching tool are countless. Images are a powerful element at the moment of associate concepts, meanings, etc.
