Currently I am teaching ESL to adults in Argentina and they find it very difficult to learn phrasal verbs. My opinion is that they should learn at least the most common ones but I would like to know your opinion about this matter. Are phrasal verbs a MUST?

      a must to learn: sure.
a must to teach and spend lots of time on them: not so sure.

Phrasal and multi-word verbs are such a ubiquitous element of natural everyday spoken and written English that I think it essential that students are made aware of them. There are different approaches to teaching them - for example grouping them by main verb - e.g. 'phrasal verbs with take'. Personally I tend to favour grouping them by particle as I think this is slightly more generative for learners. However often it can be better just to deal with them as they arise in context.
