      In this lesson students think about and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cycling and consider what else they could do personally to reduce their carbon emissions.

      Topic: Cycling

      Age: Teenage/adult

      Level: B1

      Timing: 90 mins

      Aims:

      • Language: to help students talk about the pros and cons.
      • Skills: to develop students’ reading skills 
      • Content: Learners look at cycling as a way to reduce personal transport carbon emissions

      I found this lesson plan extremely helpful. I have done this lesson with the seventh form. It was totally appropriate to their level. The students were very active enthuastic during the whole the lesson. They discussed other advantages of cycling such as, cycling saves your money becanuse cars need petrol and to be repaired, bicycle also save space cause you can park ten bicycles in a parking space, etc.

      Hi,

      I am glad you found this lesson helpful! I am glad your students enjoyed it.

      I used it again recently and wanted to change a couple of things:

      • Stage 2 maybe needs feedback at the end where learners tell the class about the persona they have created. Ask students what their character enjoys and doesn't enjoy about cycling. This prepares the class for the next stage.
      • Stage 5 they have talked about what will encourage people to cycle more. Ask 'Why is this good?' Elicit that it reduces pollution. Brainstorm other things that reduce pollution and put ideas on the board before going to stage 6 focussing on other ways to reduce environmental impact.

      I'd be interested to know if you agree with this.
