Hello,
I am a new member on this forum and I am not "real" teacher of English language. I have got teaching diploma though, but in other subjects. And I am not native English speaker either. I lived, studied and worked in UK for some time and passed CPE in June 2004. Basically, what I would ask you, who have great experience in teaching English, is what would you advise someone who was asked for private lessons. The person attented a course in some language school and finished an intermediate level. What would she like to do is to focus on vocab of her field of research, which is antropology and people's beliefs and also on improving her speaking skills, which are close to none, especially because of her low confidence when it comes to expressing herself in English. The problem I see is that it could be very difficult because of her level of English and texts concerning topics mentioned above are mostly written in "academic" English. I do not have any textbooks, I was given few texts by the future student of mine, but they are way to complex and vocab is really difficult for her to understand wit her level of English. I also would like to incorporate grammar into those lessons, because i think you just cannot go on improving your English without working on your grammar too.
What would you suggest...how to compromise...I found a simple quiz on www.bbc.co.uk about Bud. and Hin. so I am going to use that as a study text for our first lesson as an introduction i would say.
I just dont know how to go about it...
Do anyone of you have an idea what the best methodological approach would be in this setting.
I would appreciate any input..
Thank you
Dada
P.s. The person is a friend of mine, so I wouldnt like to turn her down.
