      Telling time practice online

      Hello All,

My first post here - I hope one of you can help.

I am looking for homework for an elementary adult student.

Is there anything online to practise telling the time. Obviously not comparing digital with analog but like

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/snapdragon/yesflash/time-1.htm

but also with quarter and half hours and without the Welsh!

      Regards

      Geoff

      Hi Geoff

The question that popped into my mind whilst reading your post was "Does it have to be online"? I'm afraid, if the answer is "yes" then I can't really help, as I'm not aware of any such practice sites. However, if the answer is "no", then I think there are lots of ways to practise teling the time in English.

      1) Worksheets would be easy to make, where you just draw clocks telling different times and students write what they would say. If you definitely want it to be oral practice, then get them to record themselves.

      2) If your students are more motivated to work on the computer, then you could make them a PPT with pictures of clocks on and get them to go through and 'tell the time'. If you'd like them to be able to check their own work ( I guess it's a feature of the online practice tasks that students get feedback and the answers immediately) then you can build this into a PPT as well, either with the correct answer on the next slide, or with a kind of multiple choice task, and all the answers at the end so students can add up their scoers.

      3) Get students to make a dialogue to make the work more collaborative. Give them a scenario, e.g travelling to a concert in another town/city, and get them to come up with the dialogue that would coem up if they were planning their trip. e.g. "The concert starts at eight o'Äclock, so we want to arrive at quarter to eight." "The bus stop is ten minutes away, so the bus needs to arrive by eight thirty-five" etc

      4) An adaptaion of 3) would be to have them come up with dialogue 'realistically', e.g. via emails back and forth, an online chat, etc. Or to make them really plan a real trip as a group somewhere in the town where they live, and possibly produce a kind of action plan, e.g. "John will leave his house at eight thirty and catch the bus at quarter to nine." "Jane will come by car and will leave her house at quarter past eight", and so on.

      Hope that helps!
