Teaching Practical British English
Submitted by napoleonblackwellty on 26 August, 2010 - 14:38
I've got a new student who's heading to London next month to study English for 9 months. He's at an intermediate level and in his early 20s. I'm teaching him in a private class and he wants to learn conversational English that he can use while living there (e.g. at the bank, in a supermarket, etc.) Ideally I'd like to teach him some useful expressions, and then role play them until he's comfortable.
I am Canadian, so my British vocabulary is limited to what I've heard on Peep Show(most of which is not appropriate.)
I'm going to check the BBC English-learning site, but can any of you recommend any other good sites for teaching conversational British English?
Thanks

I would say that even if you teach him "Canadian" words, most Brits will still understand, and it will be better than not knowing a certain vocab item at all! That said, I think there are lots of websites aimed at students going to live/work/study in the UK which also discuss very practical issues such as opening a bank account, using the rail network, etc. I don't know any off by heart, but I'm sure a google search would prove fruitful!
Otherwise, I know that the "Vocabulary in use" series of books is pretty good - and there's an "Academic Vocabulary in Use" which also has useful lexis for applying / enrolling at uni and getting along in the UK university system.
Some work on understanding the London accent might be useful too! But you can look at the BBC Voices of English website to get samples and practise with those!
