Taking a CELTA course and becoming a TEFL teacher ?!?!

      Hello !

I am new to the site, I am planning on taking the CELTA course in April/May this year and in my short list of destinations are Mallorca, Seville, Italy or failing that Central America.  I would really appreciate any thoughts that anyone has on destinations and whether to take the Trinity TESOL or CELTA course.

I would also like to ask for any thoughts on the job market for newly qualified TEFL teachers, does anyone know what this is like in Spain at the moment? or are there any Countries that seem to be doing a lot of hiring at the moment.

My husband and I are going to be taking the course together and therefore would be looking for work in the same town; do you think this will be difficult?

I really appreciate any ideas or suggestions from anyone!

Thanks for reading my post, look forward to hearing from you.

      Hi Vixxie

Welcome to the Teach English community! Thanks for your question.

We are Oxford TEFL (http://www.oxfordtefl.com), based in Barcelona, Spain, and we offer Trinity-accredited Cert TESOL courses ( http://www.oxfordtefl.com/Trinity-Cert-TESOL.html). I'd say the only significant difference between the CELTA and the Cert TESOL is that the CELTA focuses exclsuively on adults (it's what the letter "A" stands for!), whereas the Cert TESOL looks at teaching kids and teens, too. But apart from that, the two courses are very similar in content, and enjoy equal levels of recognition and prestige around the world.

Obviously, the larger the town, the better the chances of getting work together. In Barcelona, (or Seville, for that matter), it wouldn't be difficult, and the job market is still buoyant, despite Spain's current economic woes. That said, a validated initial training certificate is a really good idea.
