      Storytelling

I would like to gather as many points of view as possible about an issue which is unquestionably one of the most useful tools a teacher can apply in their classroom. This forum aims to collect varied opinions in order to enrich our classes. What constitutes a good use of stories in an EFL class?

Story Telling goes down well with any age group. You can try out various forms of story telling with your class.

      CREATIVE STORY TELLING

In this activity, the students should be seated in a circle. One student starts with a story and speaks only one sentence. He then calls out the name of any classmate, who has to continue from where he left. A student is allowed to speak only one sentence. Tell the class not to go down the conventional way. They need to make the story as mad as possible. The entire group will be involved since no one knows whose name will be called.

      MAKING A STORY

Put students in small groups. Give each group 15 words which they need to use while writing down a story. The list of words can be the same for all the groups and you can get a feel as to how each group thinks. This activity will also give you an insight of the thinking process and bring about the inportance of team work.

      LISTENING

Divide the class into groups. Download some interesting stories and play it for them in the class. Have around 10 questions related to the story which needs to be answered by the group while listening. You can play different stories for each group. Since they need to answer the questions while they are listening, it will improve their listening. The other advantage is the creation of a healthy atmosphere for the students to compete.

      VOCABULARY

You can give handouts to different groups and have certain words highlighted. The group members need to guess the meaning of the word. In the long run it will help them to learn lot of new words which will increase their confidence

      READING

Hand out one story to each student. Ask each student to read out a few sentences loudly. You can decide when the student should stop. Pick out any student who has to continue from where the first student stopped. Your focus here should be to ensure that they speak at the right speed, correct their pronunciation and also guide them how to speak, when they have to pause, stress or modulate their voice.

      All the best.
