Sites for syllables
Submitted by nishanthini on 18 September, 2009 - 06:02
Hello to all,
Can any one suggest me a few sites for teaching syllables. I have tried with many sites, but they dont give all about syllables and phonetics. I may not have gone through several other sites. So please suggest me some good sites for the same.

A word is pronounced in one way when it’s uttered in individually (that’s its ideal pronunciation); however it’s often pronounced in a slightly different way when it’s spoken in combination with other words.
Phonics means " the relationship between the sounds of a language and the letters used to represent those sounds "

I've had a look at the page about phonetics that you link to, and I should warn you that there are a few mistakes there.
Re. the vowel sound that you number 06: 'food' does not contain this sound. A better example would be 'book'. 'Food has the same vowel sound as 'too'.
Re. the vowel sound that you number 09: 'war' does not contain this sound. A better example would be 'car'. 'War' has the same vowel sound as 'door'.
Re. the vowel sound that you number 18: 'pour' does not contain this sound. A better example would be 'pure'. 'Pour also has the same vowel sound as 'door'.
I hope you won't mind my correcting you, and that this will be useful to you.
Best wishes, Paul.
Hi Paul,
I really appreciate for your suggestion. How to learn sounds for all the words? Is there any book to do that?

nishanthini,
Dictionaries (including the online ones) often show the pronunciation of words using the international phonetic alphabet, and the Oxford dictionary, for example, will also show sample words for each of the phonetic symbols. Given that much, a lot of listening is the only suggestion I can make. Films and TV programmes - first news, then plays and soap-operas - will bring you up to speed, but in the absence of native speakers, it'll certainly be a slog.
