      reading comprehension

Hi I´m an english teacher at a public high school, the students are going to do an entrance examination for the University, but they have difficulty on doing the exercises asked by the teacher. They are supposed to answer in english, to extract some information from texts and they only feel comfortable about it when they translate the text word by word into their mother tongue that is a problem. Any suggestion or methodology is welcome

Hi, I hope you might have heard or practised skimming and scanning techniques in reading.  This will help all types of readers i.e beginner to advanced level. Reading word by word and looking for meaning in L1 will consume the readers precious time leading to lethargy and disinterest in the process of reading.

Reading mainly depends on the purpose for which a piece of information is read.  I think you need to instill interest in readers, do some pre-reading, while-reading and post reading exercises which are likely to encourage them and read extensively.

      Thanks
