Reading books
Submitted by marysnows on 1 November, 2009 - 09:50
I would like to recommend my students some books to read for class in order to make a presentation when they finished.
Since they have different interests and likes I'd like to give them different titles of different categories, such as science fiction, adventures, romantic, mystery, terror, comedies, etc.
Could you recommened me some titles?
My students are adults and some of them are teenagers. Their level of English is advanced, so I trust they can read original literary works, not graded ones.
Thank you

It's important to know how many days will they have before presentation to complete the reading because only then anyone can recommend some good titles.
Any how if they have less number of days then you can go for short stories written by some really good fiction writers.
Kindly let me know and I will let you know about the stories which I have used with same kind of class
I agree with Haleema that good short stories written by well known writers might do as well for your project. And perhaps, after the presentation they could swap books and select another interesting story to organize a new round of presentations.
I've done that many times with my students (high school level): I take them to the school library and I let them choose whatever they want as long as it is in English. Good readers usually end up taking more than one book because they felt attracted by more than one book. Poor readers usually end up taking short stories. That's OK with me, because I want them to enjoy reading. I think its important for them to enjoy the experience.
If they are going to buy the books, it's harder, unless they can find a good selection of books in a local library. I think it's important to want to read a book in order to get brave enough to spend time reading it, at least when you are new to the experience. Therefore, it's important to be able to examine the book to see if you are attracted by it.
In this case you need to refer to the literature about activities for multilevel classes and you need to go for something different than presentation assign them a project in group of four. Develop a task which will give each student some space to make contribution but in the end it turns up as group effort. And if you think that you know who are good and poor readers then it will be easy to form groups having one good reader to support needy ones. let them refer to different books if they wish to its fine. Because you have a standard objective that is to develop specific reading skills in all students, however, if some of them moves ahead it is good. You need to focus what skills were you able to develop in all of them.
