      Questions regarding CELTA

      Hello everyone,

I just discovered this site through a websearch looking for more information on studying TEFL courses. I have a bunch of questions and any help at all would be great!

First, a little bit about myself (not to bore you tho', heh heh!), I'm 23 and stay in Glasgow and I was completely dulled by the daily grind I had found myself. My desire to travel has grown tremendously over the last 18 months or so and after speaking to a few friends who have taught abroad I thought I'd enjoy it too. My mother is French and I can still speak fluently. I've had, I guess, relaxed teaching experience in my last job and had to do a fair bit of public speaking (informative and motivational), and would love to do it as a profession.

      Now!

Glasgow uni has a CELTA course running at the end of the year, http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/languagecentre/efl/teachertraining/celtaco... , but I need some advice:

      - Has anyone studied this specific course?

      - In the interview, as it's narrowed down to 12, are there any characteristics/experience/whatever the interviewer would place above others? What kind of preperation can I do for the interview? How popular are these courses, do you think the competition be tough?

      - In the same vein, October is a good bit away, can you recommend me some reading material so I can prep myself, or give myself a headstart so to say, on the course. Any essential reading? On methodology/grammar/etc? What texts should I buy, is 'Teach Yourself: Teaching English' worth it?

      - Is it worth it? I know, I know, a bit of a cheeky question, but *really* how useful would this certificate be by itself for me teaching abroad? A thousand pounds is a lot of cash to me at the moment. What I mean is it enough by itself to get work or would I need to take other courses?

      Thank you for any help!

      Cheers,

      -Stuart

      Hello Stuart.

I'm a brazilian teacher of English. When I took my CELTA I had already been teaching here for almost 3 years and after taking the course I got a job at the best language institute in my country.

CELTA is enough for you to get a job as an EFL teacher. However the course is pretty tough. You should be prepared to deal with a lot of pressure and criticism. In the end it's a rewarding experience that I hope you'll enjoy as much as I did.

      cheers

      Jimmy

I am an English teacher from Lebanon. I did CELTA course in 2005 and I had been teaching for 2 years. It was very rewarding and enjoyable. It is tough and involves lots of tough feedback and criticism from trainers and colleagues as well. I recommend Learning teaching by Jim Scriviner for you. The interview is a little challenging and includes detailed language questions.

After doing CELTA I became another teacher with a different teaching philosophy.

I wish I could do the DELTA soon.

CELTA is very useful for employment and it really makes a big difference in the way you teach and be sure that it is worth it.

      I hope this was useful.
