With intermediate to advanced students ranging from middle school to adult ages, I've taught phrasal verbs along with collocations. The book I normally use is "English Collocations in Use" by McCarthy and O'Dell. Over the course of this study, students learn to recognize a number of collocation types: adjectives and nouns, nouns and verbs (phrasal verbs), noun + noun, verbs and expressions with prepositions (phrasal verbs), verbs and adverbs (phrasal verbs), and adverbs and adjectives.

I try to help students learn to recognize lexical groups when they occur, and by presenting those structures in categorical contexts: time, family, love, personality, politics, sports, etc...
