Need a little help with structure

When you are writing a student report, waht is the correct thing to say:
"The student received an A grade." or The student scored an A Grade."
What if the case is about classifications - we have 4 levels of scores: Distinction, 1st Class, 2nd Class, etc. Then do we say "The number of students who scored a Distinction this year is ___." OR "The number of students who received Distinction this year is _."
An early reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Syamag.
I would say that grades are 'received' or 'given' and scoring is reserved for numerical results. Normally in conversation we would use 'get' - 'I got an A grade' - but then we would also use 'get' for numerical scores, too. Perhaps you could change 'received' to 'was given' as this just sounds better to me.
I agree with russellb. Use the word score for a numerical value and awarded or received for the Grade. The number of students awarded (who received) an A Grade was twenty seven.
