As 'A Christmas Carol' is a common set text at this time of year, I thought some teachers might find my abridged and (slightly) simplified version of the opening useful. You can find it - with accompanying learning activities - here:
http://esolebooks.com/ghost/christmascarol.html
The aim is to attract reluctant readers, GCSE English language students, second language learners and all who might be intimidated by the idea of tackling Dickens.
I have shortened the text and very lightly edited some of the language to make it more accessible. All the key dialogue/quotable lines etc have been left untouched. Purists can be reassured that there are direct links to the original .
The idea is to get readers into the story more directly by highlighting the key narrative elements and reducing difficult vocab etc.I have also broken up the text, using sub-headers and accompanying images, to make it more inviting.
More key scenes to follow soon.
Many thanks
Kieran
