How to motivate my 6 year old student?

      Hi there,

I am an English teacher and I have student who is 6 year old. He is very young learners :) He likes English lessons!!! I am sure that course pays attention to his interest;however, (about 10 minutes later), he starts running one corner to another in the class...

I tried some ways to motivate him but I am still trying! Generally I gave him a responsibilites and make him an assistance for me during the course... Other students are the same age like him but I do not have any problems with my other students....

I need your precious tips...waiting your answers.

      Thank you.

      Leman U.

Hey! I did have young learners of the type you're describing, and you know what I used? I went to the store and bought some smilie stickers, the very popular ones with yellow faces:-) After each succesful task I gave my students a smilie sticker and it served as a great motivatior!!! Even those students who thought English is not their cup of tea started doing task for getting more and more stickers. I thought this might be useful for you as well, let me know how it goes.

Hi, dear Leman. Don't be afraid to solve the problem with kids. It 's a common problem for almost all the teachers in their teaching practice. To motivate your kids try to attract their attention with songs, performances, fairy-tales shown by computer.Try to create an atmosphere of competition between the computer and him. Who will be the winner and who the loser? Then after doing some kind of activity, try to grade both his work and computer, and give scores. I am writing from my working experience. I am teaching in preparatory school also, and this method of motivating works great in my groups.

Another method is to  let them ask questions on their own, to be in the role of the teacher, and to grade themselves.( with colourful marks, stars, smiles, suns, etc).

Try, you will enjoy your work.

      Hi Karine,

Thanks for your sharing! I know those stickers... they are very popular :) as you said, especially the yellow ones :)

I used them; but I can observe that ''There is still problem.'' We also have one big tree on the wall. They all have the names on it. and they can gain those yellow faces around their names...

It is intresting when he takes the sticker... he starts again to run and distrub the others...

Oh my God! We were allright today! I am still thinking other ways....

I will write you again! See you.

Hello, it sounds great! I mean the last metod that you wrote ''Grade Themselves''. It can be great! I will do it and I will write you the results again!

Meanwhile, I use the techonolgy in my class and I can recomend you one game. Its name is Tilly's World Fun. It is very educational.(May be you know it.) It is very funny and colorful. You can find competition games in it. Children love it :)

      http://elt.oup.com/catalogue/items/global/pre-school/tillys_word_fun/?cc=global&selLanguage=en

You can find them in booksellers. Also we recomend our parents to buy that Interactive CD-Rom and make practice with their children.

      I hope you like it.

      Have a nice day.
