How to improve the students' listening ability
Submitted by kangxiaolian on 10 December, 2008 - 02:59
As you know, listening is very important in second language learning. I have been teaching English for five years in a high school. But during my teaching, I find it difficult to improve the students' listening ability. Can you give me some useful ways of listening activities to enhance their listening skills?

Dear colleage,
Like other parts of teaching, listenig also needs practice . Yes practice makes perfect and I believe that if we place students in real imaginary situations to speak in english so that they feel and touch this need, they soon will be able to improve their listening.Ask them :
Suppose you are in England and you are looking for a hotel ,there is no one to help you except that you begin to speak and say in english what you want. So they should use the materials you have prepared in adance .They can also use and practise the famous english materials like NEW Headways , Learn to speak English....
There are many useful sites on the internet which worth trying:

Hi everyone,
I teach English as a second language. What I do with my students seems helpful.I choose certain songs and type most of the words. The students enjoy listening to the song several times and fill in the blanks with the missing words. Finally the missing words are revealed and we all sing the song.

A useful technique for improving listening is transcribing.
To do so, you can use some story books which are accompanied by CDs.
Try to follow the following steps:
1- Ask students to listen to some parts of the story (several times).
2- Then ask them to listen to each sentence and transcribe what they hear.
3- Finally ask them to check their answers with the book.
I am sure it works for you.

Listening, it is one of the most important skills a student can learn to do, yet it is often overlooked and underemphasized. Why? Because teachers and students get wrapped up with reading, writing and computers. They do not bother with learning to listen, yet most instructions for business and life is transmitted orally. We need to learn to listen, and listen carefully! How can a teacher encourage or improve listening skills in students?
Listening is one of the most important skills. In fact the whole language approach, started in the eighties in the US views language in a social context. It views language as a vehicle for internal interaction. So listening is one such interaction. Listening is self-directed, collaborative and helps ss construct knowledge. Hence exposure to authentic text materials is an imperative need. But how to generate interest and carry on activities? SS may be exposed to standard non-variety model at the inital stage and then on to native speakers' speech or interview that we find in Teaching English website, along with transcript. However, marks must be allotted for final examination.
Real-life construction of knowledge will build competencies required of them to achieve fluency and accuracy.
Please read my suggestions titled English listening comprehension and speaking. You can find my comment in the Methodology and Approaches section. I would like to know your opinion about those practical suggestions.
