help!
Submitted by lindski on 21 May, 2009 - 05:07
hello!
can anybody help me -
I need some phrases which I cannot find anywhere - What are the commands and orders on a ship?
How do seamen greet each other? What is said in emergency situations on a ship? What are the navigation commands (like: how to say if a ship should move forward or turn left or right, or move backwards)?

Hello dear colleague,
Words and slangs used in English language are very widespread and, in my opinion, can't be learned by heart unless you limit the area of your knowledge to a specific subject of study and use them frequently to become a part of your active memory. Sea and ship (vessel) slang are just like sea itself, very profound. Studying some books like Titanic, the Old Man and the Sea (Ernest Hemingway), and other related novels written by great writers can help a lot and you may find the sample conversations you require inthose books.
The following sites have some useful slang and terminologies related to ship and sea.
