False beginner

Hi, my name is Jillian. I took my TEFL weekend course and my CELTA course two years ago. As you have probably guessed, I am out of practise and confidence. I have recently decided to take up private English tuition to get back into teaching again, alongside some voluntary work. I have a potential adult, female student who I am told has very limited vocabulary. She has come to the UK to get a job but is struggling. I have some ideas for my first lesson, but am really struggling myself to create a lesson plan. I am yet to meet her but would really like some advice from professionals out there.

Kind Regards,

Jillian

Hi there

The very first stage would be to identify your leaner's needs. From your post it seems you haven't got much information about her apart from "she's coming to find a job and has limited vocabulary".  In a 1:1 course it's easy, you can design a questionnaire and and fill it in by interviewing her, and then give her a diagnostic test ("false beginner" is a bit too vague, she may be a total beginner considering the target needs). This will take up most of your lesson but is a must for all courses, the only way for you to design a course that will meet her needs. If time allows, you can analyse the diagnostic test during the lesson and based on this and the data collected during the interview design a negotiated syllabus with the L.

Let me know what you think.

Best
