Hi all,
On the occasion of exams as the final year exams are held these days here in Egypt, I'd like to ask teachers from all over the world about the way by which they evaluate their students'work and seeing how far your teaching as a teacher affects their learning . Let me talk in another way and ask: do all teachers use the classical ways of exams which is mainly a test is set by the teachers and the students sit in a room having an examination paper which he has to answer its questions or what ? I wish I find answers to my question about the ways by which you assess your students'work . All the best . Cheers

Dear Sohy,
We have to have a final exam for students at any level as a rule but many teachers here prefer to evaluate their students' progress continuously during the educational period or every semester.
This method is very useful for students and the teachers. Teachers can see regularly the outcomes of their endeavors and students do not have any anxiety for the final exam because educational materials are not piled up for exam night and they must study continuously and be prepared all the time.
Some teachers may delete some sections of the lessons and leave only the important chapters for final exams. Final exams must be prepared so as to cover all basic questions of every lessons being taught.
Best Wishes

Hi Ali,
I appreciate your posting as you give a hint to what should be done to evaluate the work of both teachers and students . In fact concentrating on certain points in exams and ignoring certain parts in the syllabus is not my attitude when setting an exam but this might be a trend in some teachers and they have their defense for this telling me that in this way the students will concentrate on certain and important points in their learning which they will never forget after that . Any way thanks for raising this point in evaluating your students . Any more teachers can tell me how they test and evaluate their students ? Cheers

From your question it is obvious that you cannot totally digress away from the topics to be covered, but the delivery of the content is in your hands. It is here that you should introduce an element of competitiveness and ensure that students look forward to your class. The English Language is all about innovation wherein the teacher presents the information in an interesting and humorous way which will develop a passion for the language within the students.
You should be having weekly or fortnightly assessments and your sessions should be a dynamic having a mix of various activities which will test them on their understanding. The whole class should be treated as one unit and you need to ensure that no student develops an inferiority complex. This is where the students have to trust you that you will take care of them.
All the best.
