Eschewing metalanguga or grammar jargon

I firmly believe that you can teach English effectively without ever using metalanguage in classroom. I've always eschewed grammar jargon and think it had positive effect on my learners. I believe that you can't learn the grammar (explicit) of a language without learning the language first. I'm I right?
