English in Mexico is beyond the ordinary...
jorgeguillen's picture
I wonder if teaching English in Mexico is totally different from other countries. 6 years of experience as an English teacher at different kinds of universities, mainly from IPN (like UPIICSA), 1 year coordinating a center of languages at a tourism school and with some Certificates by Cambridge (like CPE) have led me to put in perspective the goal several academic authorities have for students in Mexico. They would like that students finishing preparatory school have an FCE (by Cambridge) level of English. However, I think that the English learning culture in Mexico is somewhat different from many other countries. Many students believe learning English can be done in the blink of an eye and do not have the real notion of the seriousness this subject has. What is more, most of the times teachers and students are not aware nor willing to try out the new methodolgy trends for learning the language due to the traditional roles played by teachers for years, the fear of change and the ignorance aforementioned. So the question is if learning English in Mexico will always be the same and if it is realistic to think students at preparatory school will be able to have an FCE in their hands when they go to university. What do you think?

Dear jorgeguillen,
You are quite right. Learning a language is not an easy task and needs many times to be accomplished. Many students and even some teachers do not have a profound knowledge of the language they study or teach. They may be able to communicate with other people in English only in a limited area .English for special purposes books series are a good examples for this case. A teacher who is teaching the students in the field of agriculture must know all the vocabularies and other related teaching materials and if the same teacher is going to teach English in the field of Psychology he or she may not be successful unless they study well and learn all the required teaching materials in the new field.
Another points to be considered is that we may forget a language more quickly than we learn it if we do not practice and use it regularly.
And finally we are facing a problem with new generations that they want an English document for a special purpose (May be employment) rather than learning it profoundly. The matter you have raised has not happened only in the country you live but I believe in many other places as well.
Best wishes
