      English Language Corpora

There are many discussions concerning using English Language Corpora in English Language Teaching. I have tried to find information related to the matter. The thing is, however, I still don't understand how English Language Corpora can be beneficial to students' learning or be used in the classroom by the teacher. Thank you for your answers.

Corpora can be used in many ways with students.

The easiest way to begin with is to use a site like the Lexical Tutor to find ideas.

When students examine language through a corpus, they see many genuine examples of language in use and so they can develop language awareness. Or they can check to find the difference in use between like and as or for and since or other frequently confused words.

I have used corpora extensively in class. Using a concordancer you can get your students used to finding out not just what a word means but how it is used.

      Possible ways to use it:

      * have the students use it as they would a dictionary

      * create exercises where the students need to work out more common collocations and so on
