      English for journalism

Would like to share ideas with anyone else teaching journalists with English as a second/additional language. I train at the BBC World Service.

      Hi Susan,

I teach ESL to students doing their diploma in journalism in Sri Lanka. The students, ranging from their late teens to mid-twenties, are being trained to work in either the Sinhala or Tamil language print and electronic media. The English programme’s focus is on developing their Speaking skills (with Listening and Reading coming in close) to prepare them for press conferences, one-on-one interviews, and to generally hold their own in an environment where only English is spoken.

I’d be really happy to hear from you, especially to share teaching methods/experiences.

      Hello Susan:

I would like to compare notes!  I am teaching Journalism as a content-based EFL course at Guangxi University.

I am new to teaching but spent 35 years working for British and Canadian broadcasters (BBC, Visnews and CTV).

      Anthony

I actually teach EAP in Germany, but in one of my courses I like to analyse newspaper language and encourage my students to imitate the style in a couple of pieces of work. Actually, I'm training them to manipulate language for different types of document/text, and journalism is just one area we look at.

One particularly useful source is Swan's "Practical English Usage" which has a section on writing headline, with information on missing out auxiliaries etc. Maybe this is also something you could use?
