Submitted by Awuah-Pilgrim on 20 July, 2009 - 09:52
I have a new student in my class thus Year 6 who comes from Holland and has a challenge in English Language. I would be grateful if my friends could help me to be of much help to this student.

In all countries where English is the second or the third language, students do have a problem. When students learn grammar at the primary and secondary level, the focus of teachers is more on grammatical concepts due to which students inevitably find the language dull and uninteresting.
We picked up our mother tongue purely by listening to our parents speak. The English Language also needs to be learnt in the same manner. There is absolutely no need to make the student familiar with the use of colloquial terms, which will vary from country to country. Your focus should be on helping the student with basic structures on how to introduce oneself. Likewise you can gradually cover various areas wherein these structures can be used everyday. Ensure that the student is made to practice these structures and raise his level slowly.
You can then cover the essence of grammar in an interesting way.
