Common misconceptions in literacy
Submitted by terri1972 on 2 November, 2010 - 19:45
Hello.
I am a trainee primary school teacher, and I am preparing a presentation on common misconceptions in the core subjects.
I am finding it difficult to find resources to help me research misconceptions in literacy. I am considering using punctuation and grammar for my presentation, but really need evidence and research to back up my findings.
Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

I have one example you could use; a lot of people mistakenly use the word 'then' in place of 'than' when writing comparative sentences. For instance, instead of writing "ten is greater than six" they would write "ten is greater then six".
You'd be surprised how common that mistake is!
Other common mistakes are confusion of there, they're and their along with your and you're.
The following site offers free resources which will be of interest. www.schoolwork.bz The access code required is ure132ty The resources there are the subject of my own current research one year project which has just completed its first term. The underlying philosophy is Hot Reading which is briefly explained at http://hotreading.blogspot.com
Let me know if this helps.

People often use in the wrong manner "I'm looking forward" phrase, in the sense they say "I'm looking forward to see you" when it's correct "I'm looking forward seeing you". Just my two cents!
