TeachingEnglish
Career prospects
Submitted by Carl D. on 17 August, 2009 - 02:14
Hi,
I'm currently teaching English in Korea at a language academy (hagwon). I've been here for 7 months, this is my first time at doing such a thing and all-in-all I must say I generally enjoy it. With my contract being up at the turn of the new year I'm now considering what step to take next and I'm leaning towards gettings myself a celta and continuing teaching for awhile. What I would like to know is where can I go from there, in terms of long-term career prospects, what is the spectrum of available work in this field outside the classroom? In particular, if I were to ever venture onto a MA tesol or applied linguistics where could this lead?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Carl.

Hi carl:
I have almost the same question. I hope someone answers it!
Hi Carl and Adam
Have you tried the Transform section of the Teaching English website? There are different stages for teacher career development which offer useful advice as to different career paths you can take. From what I hear, you should be in stage 1.
For one, I think you should definitely get the CELTA which is a sound first step into teaching methodology and it will open a few doors with prospective employers. After that, you could try getting more experience as a teacher before you get the DELTA, which is the advanced diploma from RSA/UCLES. This is a very demanding course but you can do it online now and I must say it is the best course in practical second language teaching available.
After that and more experience, you can branch out into teacher training, management or materials design, or even do a Master's.
Hope this helps.
