Are you teaching or have you taught in Eastern Europe??? Advice please...
Submitted by Jack410 on 28 June, 2011 - 13:42
Just looking for details about working in Eastern Europe in places like Budapest, Prague etc.
Generally would just like to know what the job market is like for a newly qualified English male CELTA teacher (35, no degree).
What are the conditions like? what are the schools like? what is the pay like? what is the standard of living like?
Thanks

Hi there, i will try to find some information that can help you out.
Hi Jack,
My name is Sinead Laffan and I've worked in Prague for the past three years.
So first things first, Prague is a great place to live and work. The pay isn't great but your quality of life is really good. The city is beautiful and the night life is really good. If you're an outdoorsy person, there's plenty of skiing and hiking in the areas around Prague. Of course, if you enjoy beer, there's no other place for you.
Average take home pay for a newly qualified teacher is approximatley 15,000 - 17,000kc. Most teachers supplement that with some private students, charging between 250kc - 350kc per hour. The job market at the moment is pretty bad I'm afraid, especially if you need a visa. Most employers have done their hiring for the year (Sept - May) and are hiring only a few teachers at the moment and only EU nationals. That said, the market changes pretty rapidly and so I'd definitley apply for jobs that you find.
I hope that helps!
All the best with your search,
Sinead Laffan
