What is CL?
Critical Literacy (CL) is an educational perspective that focuses on the relationship between languages and social, historical, economic and political contexts. It is an approach that has its roots in social sciences, philosophy, linguistics and literary criticism. It sees language as a cultural construct and proposes the analysis of the relationships among texts, language, knowledge and society. It leads us to question texts written, visual or oral -to assess the assumptions, values and beliefs that make texts be written in a given way and also to question our readings of the texts and the world.

I'm glad to see the CL publications uploaded here at Teaching English. Our idea of further exploring the concept of critical literacy and adapting it to the ELT contexts in Latin America started in 2006, as a follow up project to the Brazil Hornby Summer School, and until today there is a group of ELT teachers in Brazil, Peru and Argentina that are reading and discussing its theorectical underpinnings and its practices.
We strongly believe that any theoretical concept applied to education must be connected to practice and that practitoners are as well positioned as academics to reflect and decide on how to apply critical literacy in the classroom. That is why the documents published here are 'working documents' - they are open to discussion and critique. This is also why the articles in the Newsletter come from a wide variety on backgrounds and a range of critical perspectives.
We are now starting the submission process for the next edition of Views & Reviews. Watch this space for further information.
Cheers - Chris
