Focus
Professional development for pre-service and in-service teacher trainers
The project
The British Council's professional development projects Teaching English to Heterogenous Classes and Teaching English to Young Learners were developed in response to demand from teacher trainers (pre-service and in-service) in the Czech Republic for professional development in these two areas of language teaching.
The two projects ran in parallel, and were each divided into two phases. In the first phase the emphasis was on providing specialist theoretical input, and in the second the participants carried out and wrote up their own research projects. There were 30 participants.
The projects were designed by the British Council's English Language Teaching team in the Czech Republic, with specialist input provided by two external UK-based consultants. Participants were also given training and ongoing support in research skills.
Participants disseminated their new knowledge and skills to trainers outside the project by means of articles, seminars, workshops and conference presentations. In addition, the project resulted in closer collaboration and trust between PRESETT and INSETT trainers and institutions.
What the stakeholders say
"Running such a cross-sectoral project provides a great opportunity for participants from different educational institutions to meet and work together... the majority of respondents found that cooperation, mutual respect and close working relationships were a really positive experience and proved to be successful."
