      Focus
Designing English language teaching materials for Young Learners in primary schools at national level.

      The project

The Bureau for Development of Education (Ministry of Education) in Macedonia required support in the training of a team of 20 teachers of English in designing materials for teaching young learners that would be implemented in grade one in the state primary schools.

The British Council provided a UK consultant who, after collating data about the skills and experience of the teachers, worked with them on the creation of these materials. The materials offer a wide range of stories, activities, pictures and songs that help the students learn the language in a motivating and interesting way.

The same group of teachers was given training on how to train 190 newly qualified teachers and 300 existing qualified teachers who have never taught young learners aged 5 and 6.

The created and published materials were successfully implemented for the first time in the English language classroom in the academic 2007/08.

      What the stakeholders say
"The British Council helped us in introducing the nine year primary education programme. Introducing English to young learners was a challenge for the Bureau for Development of Education and the Ministry of Education and Science. The task was successfully accomplished having the support by British Council. The results of the project are gaining trained teachers of English and a new learning experience for young learners. I must stress that the project proved to be a great success".
