      The project
The Yemeni Central Security Forces and the British Embassy in Yemen shared the conviction that better skills in Information Technology and the English language among Yemeni administrative personnel would be the key factor in the much-needed modernisation and internationalisation of the Yemeni security sector. This led to a UK government funded project.

Initially, the British Council provided resources for a new training centre that was established in the Central Security Forces headquarters. Local, and also British, teachers were recruited to train staff from a number of branches of the Ministry of Interior in English language and IT skills. The British Council also provided an English language teacher trainer who trained selected local English language graduates to become teachers.

This highly effective project is now resulting in major improvements in the administrative and operational capacity of Yemeni MOI staff, through developing their IT and English language skills.

The project is designed to ensure that its impact is sustained into the future, through the extensive preparation of twelve Yemeni military personnel who will be the sole teachers and administrators upon formal completion of the project in March 2009.

      What the stakeholders say

      • "The project has done a great job of training students who really need English and IT in their military contexts and it is strengthening the relationship between Yemen and the UK."
Brigadier Yahya Mohammed Abdullah Saleh, Chief of Staff, Central Security Forces,Yemen
      • "There are many language schools in Sana'a, but why would I want to go there when the best teachers are here?"
        Intermediate level English language student
      • "Not only have I seen the results in the quality of both the students and the teaching staff of the training centre, but another result is that I have been able to identify FGI students to send for necessary training abroad, in the UK and the USA."
