The project
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey contracted the British Council Ankara to deliver English communication skills training for a group of 42 graduate diplomats, to enable them to conduct diplomatic business effectively in English when representing the Republic of Turkey on missions overseas.
The aim of the language and communication skills training was to enable graduate recruits to interact appropriately and with confidence with external contacts, including counterparts from other countries, in a diplomatic setting, when in post on behalf of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The skills areas include presentation skills, social English, meetings and negotiations and professional writing skills.
In Brussels the British Council Teaching Centre has a track record of providing specialised English language training for the European Union institutions, as well as for people working in official and diplomatic contexts such as EU Presidencies and EU negotiations.

Selected comments from course participants:
Overall effectiveness
- This training course is really what we needed
- We gained much information on presentation and meetings skills
- I observed considerable improvement in my speaking skills
On the trainers
- Obviously our trainers have a maximum control over their field and I made excellent progress in using English diplomatically, thanks to them
- They were professional, the clarity of information and explanations and feedback were quite good
- Two different trainers was a good choice for this training because of the duration; we found to benefit from two different experts.
