Hello everyone,

I'm glad to hear you are all back at school. I wanted to let you know that we have decided to postpone the diagnostic test for the special classes to September 2011. Why? Well, there are a number of reasons:

      1. The date for the end of year exams has not been changed so time is very short.

      2. We would like to give you some more training on administering and marking the exams.

      3. It seems an impossible task to combine the mid year exam with the new exam.

I think it wold be useful to have a workshop/training session on the administering speaking tests and marking the speaking and writing tests. I also think it would be very useful to get your input on developing a system for reporting the marks to students, parents and headteachers. Would any of you be able to give Yvonne, Beth and myself a session on how the exam system at Al Azhar Institutes works?

I hope we can organise a couple of days together next month. Please let me know what you think.

      All the best,

      Jeanette

Hi Nasr, You can download the listening recordings from the Hello website (that is what I did) and burn them onto a CD here is the link

      http://longmansec.com.eg/default.aspx

Click on the General Education tab then Teachers, choose First Year, Second Year or Third Year and then you will see Teacher's Guide and Listening. Listening has got all the recordings for the book and the Teacher's guide has got guidance for teachers on every lesson.

I have been chasing Cambridge for the TKT results for the last two weeks - they have now been delivered to the British Council but they didn't put my name on the envelope so I have try to track them down. I am on leave all of next week so I'll chase this up when I get back. Sorry for the delay.

I'm happy to read your reply.I have used the Cd but not most of the time. But I divided the Units into skills and made my students deal with each skill as it should be. The proble I had was that alot of ss were absent most of the time due to the disturbing circumstances in our country. i'm sure that next year will be better for us all. Thanks for replying to me.

      Hi Jeanette,

Our students will start  final exams tomorrow, Saturday 7th May, 2011. We will be busy examining and marking their work till the end of May. Don't you have any plans for us for the summer?

What about our TKT results? If they are ready, I suggest that we all meet again in the centre to receive them. It will be a good chance to see each other and to discuss suggestions of developing ouselves and keeping in touch.

By the way, I sometimes take part in the discussions in the "Al-azhar New Generation". It is really great work of you, Beth and Youvonne. The Egyptian members are so wonderful. I am very proud of them. I will try to  attend the events they organise.

      All the best

      Dear Adel,

I am still waiting to receive your TKT results from Cambridge - I've written to them to try and hurry things up. We do have plans for further training for you but we have agreed dates for this yet. it would be useful to know from you and the other teachers when would be a good time to give this training. Beth, Yvonne and I are busy preparing skills based exams for years 1, 2 and 3 and we would like to give you some training both on administering the exams and assessing students' performance especially in speaking and writing. We also think it would be useful to give you a presentation on the Council of Europe's Framework for assessing speaking, reading, listening and writing. We think it would be better to give you this training close to the time when you will be administering the first test which will be the diagnostic test. What do you think? It would be useful for me to know when you are all going to be busy or on holiday between now and the beginning of the new academic year. Do you know when the new academic year will begin or are you waiting for it to be announced?

Thank you for keeping in touch and I hope your students are not too stressed out by their exams!

      Hi Jeanette and everyone,

I hope you are all ok. Thank you for the great effort you ,Beth and Yvonne are doing. I want to let you you know that we always start the new school year on the first saturday in the second half of september,so I guess It could be on the 17th of sept., if things are ok because you know, that time is gonna be the time of elections. Concerning exams I think most teachers will be involved in the exams and their corrections, for both the second term and the second round and betwen them is the general certificate of Alazhar, from now till the end of july. Ramadan will be from 1st to 29th of August . The feast will be from 30th of August to 2nd of september so I guess all the teachrs can be free from Saterday 3rd of September till Thursday 15th. Those couple of weeks will be very close to the new academic year . This is the schedule What do you see?

Ofcourse any thing can be cut off for the sake of the needed training.

      My regards,

      Amaal

Thank you Amaal those dates are good for us. I will be in touch when we have made more progress with the exams as I will need to consult with you about how we ensure that the grading system can be adapted to fit in with the system at the schools.

      Best wishes,

      Jeanette
