Hello all,

Some teachers believe that you need to shout at learners to control them. Others believe that this shows a lack of control on behalf of the teacher and that you need to keep your emotions hidden.

      What do you think?

Here is a video of a British teacher who won the  'Teacher of the year' award. It shows him teaching the first lesson of the year with the naughtiest class in the school. How does he keep control?

      Hi Suzanne,

I have experienced that when I started make my voice louder and louder in class, I realised that I lost my control on them. Then they started to speak louder and louder among them. Instead when I spoke quietly and use my facial expressions to emphasise the interest of the topic they were more eager to listen to my instructions. To sum up, I believe, depending on my experiences, shouting at them is a short term solution (five minutes only) for teenagers. Instead we can make them ready to listen and behave well by the interesting topics.

I don't have much experience but what I know from my observations, some other techniques like clapping hands, using rhymes work better with low grade students. But I might say from my observations and experience, shouting louder never works for lhaving onger silence in the classroom.

I believe that if a teacher constantly shouts, after a while students get used to it. Then, it becomes a habit which tires the teacher and doesn't help classroom management at all. Instead, as both of you said, techniques like using body language, facial expressions, counting up to 5-10, clapping and speaking very very qietly help a lot and work very efficiently.

Do I ever shout? Yes, I rarely do, but it takes me a lot to get to that stage.

Actually we might also consider speaking aloud sometimes to raise an awareness in the classroom as a practical way like using gestures. But as you point out, if it happens so frequent, it doesn't work at all.
