Inspiration: Threading the Poetic Path is the first publication of the ELT Online Reading Group. It is a collection of poems written by Group members and posted on our discussion board. All authors are amateur poets and ELT professionals living and working in different parts of the world.
We are really proud of what they have achieved in terms of creative writing and poetic inspiration and glad that we have somehow facilitated the processs through the creation of the Reading Group.
Thanks to all who have contributed and very special thanks to the British Council for all the support.
We hope their poems here serve as inspiration for other teachers to express themselves in writing and also as motivation for others to join the Group.

I read the poems and really liked them.
A great collection
Thank you!
Thanks! I am really glad you liked them. I hope you can use some of them with your students as well :)
Cheers - Chris
This inspired me a lot. I am not so fond of poetry but these are simple and easy to understand and I can easily use them with my students.I could organize a poetry day with my students and use these and even make my students illustrate the poems as my students are very much into drawing. I now then make them write acrostic poems and they come up with very funny ones, I would recommend it to anyone. At first they were very whingy about acrostic poetry but in the end they loved it and they love writing funny ones.
Hi Chris ,
thanks for Inspiration, the poems are really great!
Here's a little poem of mine.
Promises
Why do you say you will, then you don't....?
Why do I never see Your empty words?
I Always give You what You want
You Never keep Your part of the deal
You say "next time will be different, I...."
Please Remember Or My Ink Shall End Soon!

Hi Chris
Thank you very much for sharing this Chris, and thank you also to all who contributed to this poetry book. I enjoy reading and writing poetry, and very much look forward to reading these poems!
Here’s one of my recent poems, written in free verse because it allows me more freedom in flow of thought, ‘the world is too much with us’
the world is too much with us
mass media everywhere
disturbing news all day long
that unveils darkest fears
and burdens lifes path
each step of the way
in a world that is too much with us
to acknowledge the good that is
to disconnect for at least a day
from strifes and struggles
tensions and conflicts
to feel free from the many whys and hows
in a world that is too much with us
to be quiet and still
and listen to ones heartbeat
to treasure and savour
the sweet sound of silence
to see meaning and harmony
in a world that is too much with us
to gratefully embrace
the warm light of the sun
to be serene and at peace
yes
that is pure bliss
in a world that is too much with us
Thank you, and all the best
Lauren
Hi elifil!
On reading your post I thought for myself: "It is a good start for elifil her feeling of getting inspired, though she is not so fond of poetry..." If you allow me, elifil, I'd say you are on the right path to start loving poetry and being brave enough to share with your students the beauties and advantages coming from it.
Your prompt intention of organising a poetry day and using those poems, even suggesting your learners to illustrate them is a very positive approach. By the way, your students' practice of writing funny acrostic poems is also another point of motivation you will certainly want to maintain/sustain to help them improve other language skills.
In my view, poetry is life. As in life we can find/face hard, complex contexts along with easier ones, so can it happen in poems. Your students will end up realizing it if they are regularly exposed to poetry. What is more, they'll be more likely to become better readers, feeling the desire of reading beyond poetry.
Dear elifil, if you and your students eventually choose from "Inspiration..." poems to be read and discussed in class , even illustrating some of them, please let us know here about that nice experience. Thanks a lot for your attention.
Cheers,
Maria
Hi Eli and welcome!!
You really make us happy with your comments and I do hope you go ahead with this wonderful idea of organising a poetry day and ask your students to illustrate them. This is just brilliant. If you don't mind, I think I'll borrow this idea from you and try it with the next group I teach :)
Please, do let us now if you try it and how your students responded to it.
Cheers - Chris
Hi Elizabeth
