If telling my students "And now we're going to practise listening," elicits looks of dread and fear, announcing reading practice can often elicit yawns, heads descending to desks, or eyes ascending heavenwards.
And these reactions are from my adult students. My young learners' reactions may be even more extreme. "I can read at home, I come to lessons to speak!" more than one of my students has told me.

'Emergency Landing' is a very short story by Louise Cooper, from her collection of very short stories called 'Short and Scary'. This kit is the third in the series for young teens. Engine problems during a flight cause the crew to look for somewhere safe to land and for passengers to wonder about what might happen when they make an emergency landing. But nothing is quite as it seems.
Unlike previous kits, the text is incorporated in two parts into the worksheets (see 'Context'), otherwise this follows the same pattern as previous kits in the series by having a pre-reading or Ch
When journalist Emma Brockes went to get material for a story about a man whose son had been murdered, little did she realise that it would result in the publication of a stunning short story called 'Visiting Time'. It is a story about revenge and accounting for actions, and has a twist that is both factual and literary, when the murderer changes from 'it' to 'him'.
Emma's story was first published in 'New Writing 12', published by Picador, in 2004.
Ex Poser is the second in a series of short stories selected for 13 and 14 year old learners of English. It is based on another authentic short story by popular Australian children's writer Paul Jennings, the first having proved so popular.
While the layout is similar to previous BritLit kits, it is aimed at CEF levels A2 to B1 although it continues to deal fearlessly with unedited vocabulary and idiom.
When it comes to revision, this is an activity I've found time-effective and motivating. After my students have worked on three texts in the textbook and done various comprehension and grammar exercises I use this activity to revise.
