The Education for Democratic Citizenship Project

      This unusual project involved the creation of a new course for Romanian schools, in English, which supported the Romanian National Curriculum for Personal Education and Career Guidance. It also embraced aspects of the UK’s National Curriculum for Citizenship Education.

      English for the World of Work (2004 – 2007)

      The British Council Romania EWoW project was set up in 2003 with endorsement from Romania’s Ministry of Education and National Centre for Vocational Education and Training, and consultancy from the University College of St Mark and St John, Plymouth, UK.

      The BritLit Project, Portugal

      The Portuguese Teachers of English Association (APPI) identified an urgent need for help for teachers at secondary level facing the obligatory extensive reading section of the national curriculum.

      The Teacher Development by Radio Project, Nigeria

      The innovative Teacher Development by Radio Programme was the British Council's response to an urgent need articulated by Nigerian state authorities and teachers: to provide Nigeria's English Language teachers with cost-effective professional development opportunities, while at the same time impacting on a wide audience.

      The Continuing Professional Development Project, Nigeria

      Upgrading the skills of English language teachers in Nigeria is one of the top priorities of the Federal Government. The British Council was ready and able to respond to this need.

      The Near East and North Africa ELT Networking Project

      This innovative project was implemented in Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia with the intention of improving English Language Teaching in those countries by training teachers to exploit the British Council's impressive web-based resources.

      The Trainer Training Project, Montenegro

      In 2000 the Montenegro Ministry of Education embarked on a programme of education reform. English language teaching was in the frontline of the changes.

      The English for the Future Project, Middle East

      In this far-reaching project, Ministries of Education in 8 countries in the Middle East region identified a common policy priority: the improvement of the teaching and learning of English. They asked the British Council to help them meet their objectives.

      English on the Web E4U Project, Mexico

      This very successful project came into being when the Mexican Ministry of Education asked the British Council for help in developing the self-access centres (SACs) which existed in each of Mexico's 34 state universities. Some 500,000 students were using the centres.

      The WebEnglish Project, Hungary

      This ground-breaking project is helping English Language teachers and students throughout Hungary to make better use of the internet in teaching and learning.
