The Education for Democratic Citizenship Project

      This unusual project involved the creation of a new course for Romanian schools, in English, which supported the Romanian National Curriculum for Personal Education and Career Guidance. It also embraced aspects of the UK’s National Curriculum for Citizenship Education.

      The In-service Distance Training for Teachers of English Project

      The aim of this unusual and highly successful project was to improve the teaching skills of teachers working in disadvantaged contexts in Romania.

      Delhi Master Trainer Project

      The British Council was invited by the Department of Education and the State Council for Educational Research and Training to improve the levels of English teaching and learning in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.

      The Vietnam English Teacher and Trainer Network (VTTN) Project

      In 1999 the British Council conducted a review of the provision of both pre-service (PRESET) and in-service (INSET) English language teacher education in Vietnam.

      The Open Learning for English Teachers (INSET) Project, Uzbekistan

      The Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialised Education of Uzbekistan identified the improvement of in-service teacher training in higher and secondary specialised/vocational education as a policy priority and invited the British Council to be a key partner in reforming the national INSET system.

      The Assessment in English Language Teaching Project, Ukraine

      This project focuses on the assessment of learning outcomes in English in Ukrainian schools, in support of the Ministry of Education and the Independent Testing Centre's project which aims to bring Ukraine in line with European standards.

      Bilingual Schools Project, Spain

      A major innovation is taking place in Spanish state schools. Bilingual education is taking the country by storm, and improving the English language ability of many students.

      The English Language Examination Reform Project, Slovakia

      British Council Slovakia was asked by the Slovak authorities for help in creating a national school leaving examination for English.

      The Singapore Teacher Development Partnerships Project

      The British Council in Singapore has been involved in large scale in-service training for the Ministry of Education for many years, but recently the two parties have developed a new and complementary partnering approach which allows for deeper, more sustained engagement with primary and secondary school teachers.

      The English for Work and Study Project, Saudi Arabia

      In this major project the British Council responded to priorities expressed by the Saudi Arabian government in relation to the preparation of young Saudis for the workplace and for study.
