Phonology: A way to encourage your students to learn by themselves

Have you tried teaching the phonemic symbols at early learning stages?

Well, I have and let me tell you that it has been a very good experience for both, my students and me. Teaching phonology is something that must be done slowly, carefully and varying activities so students can understand the importance and use of it.

My students have improved their spelling, pronunciation, fluency and lexical skills since phonology was included in their syllabus. This has also enhanced the use of the dictionary not just for checking the pronunciation of words, but for learning how to use it as they grow fond of it.

By practising with minimal pairs, drilling exercises, phonemic scripts and intonation patterns, students have understood the importance of phonology and are now applying what they have learned.

I am currently adapting a document I found to my students needs and hope to give you some feedback once I start developing the activities in class.
