Teaching English in Dadra and Nagar Haveli

I am a teacher of English in an organisation called NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA SAMITI. I am posted in Dadra & Nagar Haveli region of India where most of the learners are first generation learners. We do teach them alphabet in class sixth as there in the primary schools English subject is not taught as compulsory subject. It is a herculian task for us English teachers in Navodaya to make them communicate in English. When we do focus on speaking aspect, we cannot concentrate on writing aspect. Moreover the testing system doesn't allow us to practise the speaking aspect. Nowadays we are in dillemma what to do and what not to do. It is a puzzle for us to deal with the learners for whom English is a foreign language. Navodaya is an institute where the rural talented children get an opportunity to develop their personality. Teachers are doing their best to impart education to the learners. Some innovatives also used but still there are some children who do not understand the language of the teacher. The learner understands the teacher as an alien and does not coperate. In my area where I am posted, the local schools got the worst result in GSEB(Gujarat Secondary Education Board). Those teachers of local schools also are putting their efforts to develop the learning. But there are some reasons why children doesn't want to study further. The utmost reason is that there are plenty of industries located in the area and the main motive of the learners of the region is to learn to get daily wages temporary job to help their poor family, and because of this reason the students of this reason avoid learning English. Only alphabet is enough for them. That's why the learning of English Language is neglected by the learners as well as the teachers in most of the schools.
